First things first, KPDH is cool as hell and deserved that Oscar and the music isn't terrible, if not my cup of tea.
I know KPop is about as fucking corporate and manufactured as music can possibly be. But so was Menudo, and Ricky Martin is legit talented (again, not my cup of tea, but he is good at what he does). So were the Spice Girls, and we'd all admit to loving "Wannabe" if tortured by Russians.
I figured that if Babymetal exists, there must be a similar band combining KPop and metal. And maybe they kick half the ass Babymetal does. I looked around and found mentions of a girl group called Dreamcatcher, specifically a handful of song titles. I listened to one. It was great. A second, better. I figured I'd play a whole album. Apparently only the handful of tracks incorporated metal... or were listenable. I could not get through the album. I could not even get through a single complete song.
Tonight, Mrs. Anarky pulled up the BTS special on Netflix. Her sister is completely obsessed, and she wanted to see what the fuss is about.
Fuck, this is the worst shit I've ever heard. It's absolutely unlistenable. It's like some completely soulless corporate robot fed a bunch of incompatible musical styles into an algorithm and trained a bunch of guys with no musical talent to half-assedly... dance? I'm not sure that's the right word.
Just...yikes, this shit is awful. Holiday Special levels of unintentional horror.
(She turned it off after a couple of minutes and actually took the time to remove it from her history.)
Anyway, maybe Korea should stick with television. Instead of KPop, here's a clip from Vincenzo that's (edited for time, unfortunately, but still) one of the most badass scenes in recent TV history.

The movie was not terrible. And the songs from the movie, including the one that was the Oscar, were pretty good. I wouldn’t put any of them on my playlist, but if it was on the radio, it’d amp you up.
What other KPop I’ve heard is all the same fucking song. It reminded me of the endless, forgettable shit Justin Bieber put out for decades.
But as there is endless KPop music and bands out there, I’d like to think there’s a “shitty” KPop band out there, that by fan standards is dreck because it’s not cookie cutter cloned bullshit, but because it deviates enough from the mainstream, it might sound good to us. Then again, I don’t care enough about the genre to waste the time trying to discover it.

"No Tom Foolery today, Ron. I'm tired of looking at your dreadful, speckled mug."
"Why do you hurt me in this way, Harry?"
”It’s a grid system motherfucker. Eleven up and one over, you simple bitch.”

I should've posted this earlier. This was the better of the songs by Dreamcatcher I listened to. I'd say it's quite good--really feels like it could be the end credits to a new season of Demon Slayer or My Hero Academia (which, yes, I know are Japanese).
Unfortunately, it does seem these truly interesting forays they make into rock and metal are really sporadic in an otherwise pretty terrible catalog.
