I've also read a couple of reviews that said it paid little heed to the source material, which is unfortunate.
Casting Depp as Tonto doesn't bother me in the least.
I'm not sure what they're referring to, but John Reid and his bother's posse get ambushed by Butch Cavendish, and Reid makes a mask from his dead brother's vest, with the bullet holes being the eyes. That's how I always remembered the origin, and that's how it plays out in the movie. They might have expanded Tonto's origin a bit so that it works in with LRs.
But, no matter what anyone says about it, if it's getting Speed Racer and John Carter comparisons, maybe I need to check it out.

I saw it today.
It. Was. AWESOME. I would definitely put it up there with Speed Racer and Avengers as purely bombastic cinematic fun. I have no idea why people are harshing the movie. It's definitely got that cheeky
Pirates vibe to it. The horse, Silver, steals every scene he's in, being an alcoholic, tree climbing horse. And the finale of the film (yes, set to the William Tell Overture) is easily the greatest thing I've seen on the big screen this summer. After, IM3, Man of Steel, and to a lesser extent, Star Trek, I was sorely displeased with this year's offerings. But this film renewed my joy.
I highly recommend you go and enjoy the shit out of this movie.
