Winter Classic - Sabres vs. Penguins

most tv sucks these days, but there are some shining examples of good writing, acting, camera work, etc... we call those Deadwood and Arrested Development. Family Guy sucks ass, though...

It almost looked like they adjusted a couple of people's head shapes, but not too much on the faces. Ovechkin was the funniest by far!

Wings & Habs both pulled out their game 1s - I'll say the Wings pulled theirs out because Colorado OWNED them over the last 10 minutes of that fucking game. Ozzy stoning (whoever that was) from the slot with about 10 seconds left was FUCKING AWESOME. :x

The Wings game was fantastic, and that save on John-Michael Liles in the last few seconds was damn near a heart breaker. Detroit showed last night why they'll win the west: In the rare event that the D shits the bed, they've got a net-minder (be it Hasek or Osgood) who'll bail their asses out with saves like the one(s) Oz made last night. A classic Wings performance.

But the game of the night BY FAR was the Habs/Flyers. I can't stand the Flyers, so anytime they get their comeuppance is never soon enough and said comeuppance is even better when its delivered in OT of a game they all but had in hand going into the final minute of the third. Say what you will about Don Cherry, but he was spot on when he said it was ignorant for Philly NOT to have a lefty in for that final faceoff of regulation to put it into the corner.

AHL goalie makes 98 saves, loses in 5 OTs
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Ryan Potulny scored at 2:58 of the fifth overtime to give the Philadelphia Phantoms a 3-2 victory over the Albany River Rats early Friday in the longest game in American Hockey League's 72-year history.

Michael Leighton made 98 saves for the River Rats, and Scott Munroe stopped 65 shots for the Phantoms.

Philadelphia's Jared Ross tied it at 2 at 15:13 of the third period with his second goal of the game. Kiel McLeod scored twice in regulation for Albany.

In the previous longest game in the AHL, Michael Ryder scored at 14:56 of the fourth overtime to give Hamilton a 2-1 victory over Houston in the 2003 Calder Cup finals.

In the longest game in NHL history, Mud Bruneteau scored at 16:30 of the sixth overtime to give the Montreal Maroons a 1-0 victory over Detroit in the 1936 semifinals.

Hell of a domination by the Wings tonight.
Early MVP pick: Franzen or Osgood?

Great question, especially since I was thinking the same thing myself.

If Franzen continues to bury it, he'll easily be the MVP (provided the Wings get past Dallas/SJ). Osgood is playing well, but not as good as MAF and I totally expect the Pens to win the east, so Oz has some beast-like goalie stats he has to match if he wants playoff MVP over Fleury.

C'mon Dallas. Finish those Sharks off. The Sabres have their first round pick. It's hard being a fan of the Bills and Sabres pulling for a team from Dallas.

Kenny Holland is supposed to be on Gary Bettman's radio show today. It is on XM 204, and I hear you can download it from the NHL website. I will be amazed if someone doesn't ask about that goal that was called back last night.

As well they should. If the jackoffs on VS. can clearly see it was a HUGE miscall, it has to be blatantly obvious to everyone else.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist in any way, but I think its funny that Detroit had what was clearly a goal disallowed. Now, rather than wrapping up the series on a ho-hum, boring Wednesday night, they'll (hopefully) wrap it up on a SATURDAY AFTERNOON NATIONAL TELECAST.

I've always been a fan of yours, Ran, but now I feel your pain when it comes to Dallas and their bullshit crease calls. :beard:

That was horrible - and cements any theories that the refs would be looking HARD to disallow a goal as a makeup for the one they botched the other night. Too bad this one was so blatantly NOT interference, I would have been okay with it had it been borderline. Now the 'Guins will have the extra day of rest with a win tonight. :frus:

Holland didn't show any signs that the call bugged him. Bettman asked him straight up about officiating, specifically last night's game. Neither of them came straight out and admitted the refs blew the call. It was brought up that after each round of the playoffs, they review referee performances and decide who will go on, and who will have the rest of the season off.

All of the other guys on the radio said it should have been a goal, but that goal in game 1 shouldn't have counted. They also pointed out that a goaltender interference penalty could have been called on Holmstrom shortly before that goal was called back. It was also brought up that "in the crease" is defined by the area up to 4 feet above the paint. So, technically, Holmstrom's ass was in the crease on that goal. Holmstrom also has a reputation of being in or at least close to the crease, which probably helped trigger the call.

It was a "reputation call" for sure - anyone else parked there and it would have been 1-0 WIngs. I don't blame them for waving one off - honestly, I know he's over the line a LOT of the time - but when that puck went in, even his ass was out of the crease. They showed the top-down view and there was white ice - but I don't recall seeing what transpired before the shot was taken. Regardless, Turco had every opportunity to respond to that puck unhindered - he just never even got a glimpse of it. That goal was as clean as a fucking whistle. :frus:

On another tip, the WIngs have finally broken through Turco late in the first in game 5. He was starting to look a bit untouchable again on their first 2 power plays, so I'm glad the zero has been dealt with. Now the Wings need to keep the pressure on and finish this fucking series off this fucking afternoon. :x

EDITED: Well Dallas held on - and I'm concerned. I don't know how many years in a row I have to watch the Wings play with NO urgency when things are urgent, and NO killer instinct when they have their opponents on the goddamned ropes. It's too little too late to wait until the last 2 minutes of the 3rd period to start really trying, but they seem to be totally content to float through period after period when facing a one goal defecit in the playoffs. Fuck am I mad right now. :frus:

We haven't been down to the Strip in a while, so we went to Caesar's Palace because there is an FAO Schwartz there. As we are walking through, there is a big sign in front of the sports memorabilia store. TODAY ONLY! GORDIE HOWE AND PETE ROSE SIGNING AUTOGRAPHS. Ok, Pete Rose is always here. No big deal. But Gordie Howe? I never thought I'd get to see him in person. So we went to the table where they had a pile of pictures, pucks, jerseys, etc. that he would sign. $149 for a puck or a 11"x17" picture. A 8"x10" was $99. The jersey was like $500. Yes, I seriously considered shelling out the $100 for the signed photo, but it didn't seem right. My wife got some pictures of him on her phone. I'll post them as soon as she downloads them. And maybe I can use this as an excuse to buy an autographed Gordie Howe puck or hockey card from somewhere else.

There was a decent line for Gordie Howe, but no one was in line for Pete Rose. I felt a little bad for him as he was one of my favorites as a kid.

He was busted for betting on baseball, not cheating. Cheaters would be Sammy Sosa, Jose Canseco, Rafael Palmero, Mark McGuire, and all those other guys from the 80s and 90s that were on 'roids.
