Interesting goings on in Wolverine, with some major Civil War implications. Over the past 5 issues Wolverine had it out with the Sub-Mariner as well as Nitro - and learned that someone had played a major role in creating the schoolyard disaster that caused the Civil War to start. A very cool idea - with a terrible resolution:

***************** SPOILERS*********************

So it was the CEO of Damage Control, and Wolverine kills him in front of a bunch of witnesses with 3 sharp claws to the face. Then he was in every other fucking comic I read over the past month and it wasn't mentioned anywhere. At all. No one chastised him for the killing, no investigation was undertaken and no charges were pursued......... what the fuck?

This arc was actually pretty awesome to read, until I started wondering how Wolvie gets away with everything all the time. That really pissed me off, so I ranted in another thread.

Damage Control?

I figured they finally (wisely) retconned them out of existence after they couldn't fix the Twin Towers in 24 hours.

Nope. Apparently they've been there all along and had some interest in creating the reality show featuring New Warriors to propegate their business.

Wow.

That just seems tasteless. You have a company that specializes in fixing shit in record time, and then you have two large buildings destroyed in the real world, and you keep them around? WTF?

Clearly you don't understand the revelance of Damage Control in the Marvel Universe. Damage Control is privately owned business that sometimes recieves government contracts to rebuild building destryoed in metahuman conflicts. Obstinately, the New York Building commision obfuscuted to NOT have Damage Control come in a repair the damage done on Sept 11th. Damamge Control is a brilliant idea and works well within in the confounds of the Marvel Universe. It applies humor to situations and still has a realistic propogation behind it as a capitialistic endeavor. Yoiu must be entirely stupid to not understand that.

How many words did you misuse in that paragraph, you fucking nitwit?

Back to the Muties. Marvel has announced it's big X-Event this summer. "Endangered Species" beginning with a one shot starring the Astonishing X-Men, X-Factor and the New X-Men. Apparently the number 198 is going to go even lower....

We'll see. I'm only sticking with Astonishing until Whedon quits - so what, 3 more issues? I'll read Uncanny, but I'm not getting roped into another fucking Civil War.

Speaking of Astonishing, I'm going to have go and do a complete re-read - I read issue 21 today, and it was like I hadn't read the last 2 or 3. :?

That's what happens when the book comes out every other month. :(
You've got three more issues then a Super Sized Special #1 that wraps everything up.

Supposedly "Endangered Species" begins with the death of a major character and I'm getting the feeling that character is Mystique.

Interesting. Any news on who's taking over the book when this team leaves?

I'm planning on picking up the First Class special, the art on the ad page is awesome. Has anyone been reading that book?

I'm planning on sticking with Wolvie and Wolvie: Origins until the ends of their respective arcs, then it's dropsville for awhile. Piss me off - it seems that every time I catch up and have a complete run of Wolverine, I wind up taking another break.

Unless they can get someone incredible (like Brubaker) I hope nobody does.
And if they do get someone awesome to continue it, the second it crosses over to another X-book, I'm done (that is if I continue when Whedon leaves).

I would like to see a "non-comic" writer like Orson Scott Card, or Brad Metzer take over the book to keep the fresh perspective rather than have a "regular" writer take over. I'm loving Warren Ellis on Thunderbolts and could see him doing some great things, but writers eventually start writing to keep things fresh for themselves and they could miss oout on some really simple, but great story ideas because it might be a rehash of something they already wrote in a different book and they would get tired of rewriting it. But a totally new writer to the medium would come up with something excellent.

So it turns out the "Big Mutant Death" was a student, or should I say a young man who had refused Scott Summer's offer to be a student at Xaviers. There was nothing nefarious about the way he died. No hidden super villain agenda. He was just living his life in Anytown, USA and accidentally stepped into traffic. We never meet this young soul, the issue starts at his funeral. I feel let down because of the way they marketed this issue.

Anyway, the Endangered Species back up story runs through X-Men, Uncanny, New X-Men and X-Factor. The big crossover it's leading up to is called "The Messiah Complex". Whether or not skrulls are involved remains to be seen.

There's a new limited series coming out dealing with New Starjammers led by Havok and their resistance effort dealing with Emperor Vulcan of the Shi'Ar. No word on if any skrulls are involved in that one either.

I've pretty much given up on Wolverine and Wolverine:Origins. I heard Marc Guggenheim is coming back for another arc, so I may see what thats all about because I liked the Civil War arc (even with the retarded ending)

Astonishing continues to live in its own little corner and rock.

Okay, I've nearly completed my catch-up reading on X-Men and Uncanny. The ending of the Shi'ar war story in Uncanny wasn't really an ending at all - kinda disappointing. Chuck has his power back, and (as EP posted above) we'll need to buy a limited series to see how Havok and Polaris finally take care of Vulcan (I'd assume). With all the hype, I'd expected this story to wrap in Uncanny..... how naive.

The X-Men stories leading up to #200 (which I still haven't read yet) were awful. Awful art (by Humberto Ramos, so there you go EP) and stories featuring characters I couldn't really care less about, other than Rogue.

One highlight from this pile was Scot Eaton's art on the Endangered Species one-shot, which kicks off the 18 part backup story arc that will run through the 4 core x-books (again, as EP posted above). I have no plans of buying extra books to keep up with this, and I'm done buying X-Men. Hopefully by reading Uncanny I'll be able to get the gist, and if not I'll have to look for some forum that can provide me with synopses of the other issues.

Remaining to be read in my X-Men pile (along with X-Men 200 and Uncanny 487) are the First Class special (with Paul Smith art - rock!!!), the finale to Phoenix: Warsong, the X-Men Annual from a few months ago and the end of the Jeph Loeb Wolverine vs. Sabretooth story that I can't finish until I pick up my books from last week.

Once these books are filed, I'll be back to buying Uncanny only - with a view to dropping it after issue 500 if I'm not impressed.... breaking a run that now encompasses over 30 years worth of books.

I'm going through a real "down on collecting" phase here, where it really feels like the vast majority of what I'm being offered by both the toy and comic companies is boring and repetitive. I either need to expand my horizons or simply stop spending the money just to keep my collections intact. Perhaps a new topic here would be more fitting - I'm lazy though.
