Re: Cheap DVD buys
Got Crash and Monster Squad for $4.99 each today at Circuit City. I've not seen Crash, but what I hear from literally everyone is so positive, I figure it's a great movie if it lives up only to half the praise it earned.
I was looking for Johnny Dangerously, which was advertised for $2.99. On the drive back from San Diego, we stopped at three Circuit Cities (Citys?). All three had $2.99 bins that were bare, even at only 11:00 AM. Apparently, at each of the stores, they'd not gotten in any of the titles, so were limited to what they have on hand. For $2.99, I would definitely have bought that classic. I called up mis padres and asked them to check tomorrow (when the sale ends) if they're near a Circuit City.

Re: Cheap DVD buys
My local Big Lots store has had a rack of DVDs for $3 lately, mostly bombs/bad movies, but far better than the movies you typically see there.
I picked up Hollywood Homicide, Starship Troopers 2, Freedomland, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
I liked Hollywood Homicide and thought it got an unfair shake.
Freedomland for Sam Jackson.
I'm looking forward to seeing how comically bad Starship Troopers 2 is.
And Crouching Tiger is a movie I've had on my watch list since it came out.

I saw Blankman at Big Lots once and passed on it. I like superhero movies, I like Damon Wayans, but this didn't have enough positive buzz for a blind buy.
Awesome deal on Crouching Tiger.

Re: Cheap DVD buys
I was in a Big Lots yesterday and they had a huge display. So, today, to give Mrs A time to grade (which, otherwise, she will let pile up until the end of the semester, and then I'm the one who gets the brunt of her stress), I stopped by three local Big Lots.
Found for $3, all blind buys:
Kung Fu Hustle (most were foolscreen, but one store had it in widescreen)
Steamboy
Closer
The Adventures of Mark Twain (this looked goofy, but I'm a Mark Twain nut, and I'd prefer something that's supposed to be a kids' movie than fucking up Huck Finn to make it safe for politically correct kids)
In Cold Blood
The Master of Disguise (unfortunately foolscreen, but that's still the only way it was ever released, and I doubt it's a big candidate for a re-release)
Also, two Woody Allen boxed sets that made me shit myself right there in the store:
The Woody Allen Collection #2 (Shadows and Fog, September, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Another Woman, and Alice) for $13
The Woody Allen Collection #3 (Hannah and Her Sisters, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Broadway Danny Rose, Zelig, A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy, and Radio Days) for $16
All blind buys except for Hannah and Her Sisters, but it's fucking Woody Allen, man!
Then I stopped by Best Buy and got Mr Bean's Holiday, which was finally on sale for less than ten bucks ($7.50).
Unfortunately, goddammit, when I went to Amazon to copy and paste the full contents of the above sets, I discovered both Mighty Aphrodite and Everyone Says I Love You (Allen's two best movies from the 1990s) are out of print. What the fuck? One has Natalie Fucking Portman in it, and the other won a fucking Oscar!

Re: Cheap DVD buys
Told you they had some pretty decent buys there.
I saw most of the ones you listed also.
I was pretty shocked to see Closer on the rack though. $3 for Portman in a thong and a super quick nip slip? Crazy.

Re: Cheap DVD buys
Whenever I go to Big Lots on a dvd hunt, they never have anything.
I went there numerous times for the Memento LE 2-discer, for $3, but mine never had it.
Would love to own Closer for $3, but mine won't have that shit either.
Big Lots is just too inconsistent as far as distribution. Some stores get the goods, others get shit (well, all get shit).

They smelled of moss in your hand. Polished and muscular and torsional. On their backs were vermiculate patterns that were maps of the world in its becoming. Maps and mazes. Of a thing which could not be put back. Not be made right again. In the deep glens where they lived all things were older than man and they hummed of mystery."

Re: Cheap DVD buys
My discovery of these DVDs was a happy accident (Ugh, I hate that fucking phrase).
I went in there looking for some cheap stationary supplies and saw the display.
It was a veritable gold mine that day. I also got 2 crime novels for $2 each, Neil Gaiman's Mirrormask book for $3, and they had all of the individual Star Wars Galactic Heroes (didn't buy those though).

Re: Cheap DVD buys
UK, if you want, I'll check for Closer next time I'm there.
It's probably a big longshot, but if any of you guys find Zorro: The Gay Blade at Big Lots for $3, I would greatly appreciate it if you could grab it for me. It's OOP, but I have this feeling there are a bunch of unsold copies sitting in a warehouse waiting to hit Big Lots or another closeout store. Same goes for Everyone Says I Love You or Mighty Aphrodite. Except those two don't star The Grip and Bizzaro The Grip like Gay Blade does.

Re: Cheap DVD buys
The Big Lots I went to today didn't have any of the movies you guys mentioned. They had Gattica, Sniper 2, Wild Things 2, London, a Snowman movie, and a bunch of other crap I didn't even recognize.
Re: Cheap DVD buys
Thats how it always is at my local Big Lots RII.
Don't worry about Closer 'nark, but I appreciate the offer. I think it goes on sale for pretty cheap quite a bit (around $5), and having you ship it to me would probably be more expensive. Thanks though.

Re: Cheap DVD buys
Yeah Closer is like 7.50 at WM I believe which means it is on its way to a 5 dollar bin soon.

Re: Cheap DVD buys
Found Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (original series) Vol. 2 for $5.99 at K-Mart today. No other volumes. I've got that and the Vol. 5 I found about a year ago at WM for $5. And Target puts Vol. 1 on sale for $6 occasionally, so I'll get that soon.
Odd that only a few random volumes are hitting clearance bins, or at least clearance bins around me.
BTW, they did something really strange with TMNT. They were releasing 12-episode volumes up through Vol. 6 (I think), and then they gave in to the people who wanted season sets. But they only did the sets for the seasons they hadn't released. So it's six volumes, and then three or so seasons. More or less, the show when any of us were paying attention are on the volumes rather than the season sets, though I still plan to eventually get the whole thing.

Re: Cheap DVD buys
Amazon has a decent Halloween Sale going on. There are a few really good deals, like the newest Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 disc Ultimate Edition Steelbook and the newest A Nightmare on Elm Street Infinifilm 2-discer, for $7.99, both of which I can highly recommend as they are superior to any previous release.
I picked up The Blind Dead collection, couldn't pass up $27, and Spidery Baby. Got Texas Chainsaw for a friend.

Re: Cheap DVD buys
Looks like Walmart reloaded the $5 bin and the $4 movies are back. The $5 bin has a bunch of horror movies like some of the Nightmare on Elm Street and Jason movies. I think there were a couple John Carpenter movies in there, too.
As far as the $4 movies go, they had Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Was this one any good? The other titles were things like Nacho Libre and Blades of Glory.
