Apparently, studios are making more shitty DVD sequels....

I just saw info on The Lost Boys: Tribe. I have no idea what "Tribe" refers to, but I'm guessing it means "shitty sequel no one should be subjected to watching." The first is classic.
Several weeks ago, I saw many ads for Bachelor Party 2. Again, direct to DVD.
I also read somewhere that Paramount was planning Airplane! 3 for DVD.
It's apparently cheaper to bypass the theater system altogether. But, why not use the savings to put out decent movies? Or movies people want to see?
I really can't imagine, even with the name recognition, that there's any market for this shit. It was bad enough when it was only Disney and the idiots behind the Darkman sequels doing it. Now, are we going to have to eventually see The Sixth Sense II or What Dreams May Come Again? Somewhere Else in Time? After After Mash? The Usual Suspects: Soyze's Revenge?
How many people watched Bachelor Party and see ads for a new one and think it's a real sequel? Honestly?

Apparently they actually make money.
They don't cost much to make and there seem to be a never ending line of morons out there.
Many of them, like the American Pie ones rely heavily on the T&A aspect.

And Eugene Levy's continuing spiral into a pit of total lack of self-respect.
Sad, really. With American Pie and all those Christopher Guest mockumentaries, he really was poised to come back bigger than he'd ever been. Now, he's just some background character on direct-to-DVD shit.

Actually, the really pathetic thing is, I looked on Wikipedia because his name was escaping me. Okay, that's not pathetic, but I actually read the synopses of the three "American Pie Presents" movies. It appears that Stifler had a lot of brothers, and one or two of them appear in all of these DVDs. Usually played by different actors from movie to movie. Which makes it really especially sad for Mr Levy. Even the fucking throwaway actors who don't have their SAG cards don't return.
Dude, you were on motherfucking SCTV! That's supposed to equal greatness! Or at least not obscurity.

ROI- Return on Investment. and Risk Managment.
Speed Racer died on the vine and cost a bazillion bucks to make. Had it been made for 10 million and released straight to video, it woulda been gangbusters, no matter how awful it might have been.
A sequel has a built-in audience that can be exploited on the cheap. While a lousy sequel might not do well in the theater, it can do just fine on the DVD market. Somewhere out there, somebody even loves Superman IV. It would have been nice if that one coulda gone straight to video instead of sucking the price of a movie ticket out of someone.
I don't really see them as being too different from the Grindhouse era films. Those movies were profit centers and would be straight to video these days. While I have only rarely liked one of those films, they do have some artistic merit, if for no other reason than their ability to churn your stomach.

They're coming out with a direct-to-DVD sequel to "Donnie Darko", which is blasphemy. I heard it's supposed to be about his younger sister.

A sad article on the future of the
Direct to DVD phenomenon, with this nauseating ending:
But one of the more disappointing points is that a direct to dvd sequel degrades the property that it is raping. I never want to see a Grease sequel, but I know a lot of women who would. The release of Grease: Greasing To Win It will ruin any hope for another big screen film. But the sad fact is that these movies sell because people are stupid. According to The Hollywood Reporter, most of the American Pie and Bring It On DVD sequels have sold between 1 million - 2 million copies each, which is nearly as much money as 300 or Ratatouille made at the box office.

I wonder if the guy who wrote that knows there was a Grease 2. And it was almost Transformers bad.
Of course, I'm the only person in the world who doesn't go apeshit for Grease. It kinda blew. Don't sing "Greased Lightning" and try to change my mind, either.

"Kinda" blew? It was so bad I had nightmares for weeks.

Compared to Grease 2, it only "kinda" blew. A guy down the street was watching Grease 2, and he killed himself before it was over.

"Grease" is one of those movies where it's okay the first time you watch it, but every time after that is painful.

Unless you're a girl. My wife and her friends can't get enough of Grease. Or of Flashdance, Footloose, Chicago, Hairspray..... there's a trend here somewheres.

For the love of Gretzky...
Coming Soon to the $5 bin at Wal-Mart (and the Dollar Store soon after):
Slapshot 3: The Junior League
As if Slapshot 2 wasn't a big enough disaster.
There is also talk of a
Slapshot remake.
