Celebration IV: Anyone care?

Post by anarky »

Just curious.

About 3-4 years ago, a SW Celebration in LA would've been the coolest thing ever.

But now, with the prequels falling flat, Lucasfilm becoming more and more of a money-grubbing juggernaut with little to no concern about telling a good story (Leia's son becoming a Sith Lord? WTF?), and the major disappointment of the past two Comic-Con Star Wars "Spectaculars" (especially the footage they showed of C3, where it looked like "you pay your money, you see a lot of other geeks, and you make your own fun around our many vendors"), I really am not interested.

Especially not for $110 per person. Comic-Con isn't even that much, and I know there's cool stuff there.

Last year at Comic-Con, despite specifically promising major surprises, the Spectacular was horseshit. Nothing at all. Some footage of a fucking Indiana Jones game for XBox 360. And Mrs Anarky and I paid a lot of money to go to one of the "Fan Club Breakfasts" two years ago at the Con. It wasn't a buffet. It wasn't even a decent breakfast. Fuck, you couldn't even get seconds. And they gave out a goodie bag of unsold TPM shit that Big Lots finally gave up on. I went to the fucking Master Replicas party for another site and, shit, Peter Mayhew was in the line right behind me. You'd think they could get some of these fucking autograph whores to go to breakfast, instead of giving us undercooked eggs, thanking us for being fans, and then basically leaving us to discuss amongst ourselves. (Fuck, George could've gotten up an hour earlier and called in.)

I'm just afraid, from the footage of C3 that they showed last year to hype C4, that it's more of the same. "Thanks for your money, keep spending it, now enjoy the idiots in costume!"

Huh. Zero's a huge Star Wars geek? Who'd a figured...

I myself, while tempted to attend since it's pretty much in my own backyard, will NOT be shelling out $110 dollars. Are they out of their fucking mind?

Fuck George Lucas, that fucking douche.

I was just comparing Comic-Con and C4 at another site.

At Comic-Con, I can meet newbies who desperately want to sell their stuff, five minutes before Frank Miller or Jim Lee. At C4, well, there are no "newbies," and I can fucking guarantee you Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill won't be there.

When it was announced, my wife said we could go if I wanted to. I was thinking about it, but that was before you pointed out the tickets were $110. Screw that.

I still need to get yo' punk ass to Comic-Con. Especially with KH, Cappy, and Rollo planning to attend.

It's in June or July, right? What does Comic-Con cost?

A lot of pop-culture doesn't interest me enough to really go. But, I was messing around on imdb last weekend and saw they are doing an animated Beowulf movie that comes out in November. Same animation style as The Polar Express. Some big name actors are part of it, too. It might be cool to see if they have a booth at Comic-con. And if there is a decent Star Wars booth, maybe it will be worth going.

I need to be scratched from the list. Sorry.

We decided that paying off the car and a couple credit cards would probably be the smarter thing to do with the money. I guess there's next year.

A'ight, shithead. :P

(I totally understand. If we hadn't paid for tickets at the '06 Con, and if it wasn't almost in the backyard, I would very seriously consider passing.)

Rogue II: July 26-29, plus the 25th if you pre-register in advance. I'd recommend going for the entire five days, as there's a lot of stuff, and even four days isn't really enough time to do everything. It's $50 per person, kids 12 and under free, as long as you get it in by April 19.

Like I told Cappy, for whom it now does not apply, and will simultaneously tell KH, if you register for the whole shebang, go on Wednesday night if only to pick up the tickets so you don't have to stand in quite as nasty a line as on Thursday morning. Some exclusives go on sale then, too, though usually not the Hasbro stuff.

There was a panel discussion on Beowulf last year, so I'm sure there'll be a lot more this year, plus likely a booth and freebies. Star Wars didn't have a booth last year, but typically all of Friday is devoted to SW panels, and I'd be surprised if any revelations from C4 don't show up there.

I guess all that SW stuff I saw last year was Hasbro, etc. I don't really care about either of the upcoming TV shows, mostly because it sounds like Lucas is too involved in them to be any good.

I'll talk to the wife about it. Not sure if I'd bring the kids. My mother might take them to Disney or something instead.

You need to go Rogue 2, we need to watch the Holiday special while on crack and drinking night train. We need three to do so, and Cappy backed out. Oh wait, Rollo is there, but weekend only. Hmmmmmm, you are the back up guy. Get your stank ass there.

Oh, that's right; I forgot about the "suicide pact." KH, Rogue, and myself, and maybe Rollo, would be a decent panel for that.
