God of War (1 and 2)

Anyone else a fan?

The first one was pretty damn cool, good and violent with a bit of boobies.
I'm stuck at the part where you need to move the crate in place before the floor spikes pop up and kill you. Just like many games (especially the GTA games) I get stuck at one particular part, get really frustrated and don't pick it back up.

God of War 2 is on sale at Circuit City this week for $10. Naturally, they didn't have it, so I went to Wal-Mart for a price match and used $2 I had left on a gift card, so I got it for $8.46 (with tax).

I wanted to play the first one, but my PS2 died before I had the chance.

I've glanced at them and thought they looked like any other game. What sets them apart?

They are pretty much like any other third person hack and slash game, with a ton of different attacks and some puzzle-type things thrown in. The first one won a ton of "Game of the Year Awards" (IGN even called it the best PlayStation 2 Action game of all time).
A cool story - based on Greek Mythology - A Spartan warrior sells his soul to the Ares and is soon tricked by the God. Now he wants revenge.
Boobies - even if it is a video game.

Alrighty then. I've still got my PS2 set up downstairs. Once I'm done with my Metal Gear Solid marathon (the new one's coming out on the 12th of June so I need to rev up for that) I might see if I can grab a cheap used copy of part 1.

"God of War 2" is my favorite game of all time. I've beaten it on Spartan and Titan difficulties, and I am now fighting Zeus with no weapon or magic upgrades.

I can say that what sets it apart is the design, music, and visceral combat system. I cannot think of another game where I derived so much bloody satisfaction from killing. Maybe the first time I pulled off finishing move in Mortal Combat 15 years ago, but this is even better. The scale and design of the game are also just gorgeous to look at, especially once you get to the Isle of creation, and the accompanying badass music crescendos right as you finish off the bosses, which enhances the sense of fulfillment.

As an added bonus, you have to fight a boss you will definitely recognize from other media. You'll know him as soon as you hear his voice, before you get to him!

I would recommend playing at least on Spartan difficulty. It is easy enough without giving it away. If you can stomach Titan, you really have to learn the combat system (fairly easy to do after going through it once on Spartan mode), but it is really satisfying (as well as maddening in places)!
